ALICE diffractive physics in p-p and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC

چکیده
The ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider LHC is presently being commissioned. ALICE consists of a central barrel, a muon spectrometer and neutron calorimeters at 00. Additional detectors for event classification and trigger purposes are located on both sides of the central barrel. The geometry of the ALICE detector allows the implementation of a diffractive double gap trigger by requiring two or more tracks in the central barrel but no activity in the event classification detectors. Some selected diffractive physics channels are discussed which become accessible by a double gap trigger. The interest of such diffractive measurements in proton-proton as well as in lead-lead collisions is outlined.

Small-x Physics with the ALICE experiment at the CERN-LHC
High energy p-p, p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN-LHC offer unprecedented opportunities for studying wide variety of physics at small Bjorken-x. Here we discuss capabilities of the ALICE experiment at the CERN-LHC for probing small-x QCD physics. A new forward electromagnetic calorimeter is being proposed as an ALICE upgrade to explore the small-x region in more detail.
متن کاملCharged particle production in Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions at ALICE
Global event observables are of fundamental importance in characterizing the properties of the strongly interacting medium created in heavy-ion collisions. The ALICE experiment at LHC measured charged particle multiplicity distributions in Pb-Pb collisions at √ sNN = 2.76 TeV in a wide pseudo-rapidity range (−5 < η < 5.5) exploiting different techniques. The production of high transverse moment...
متن کاملUpgrade and physics perspective of ALICE at the LHC
ALICE at the LHC, collecting data in Pb-Pb, p-Pb and pp collisions, aims for the characterisation of the strongly interacting matter at unprecedented energy densities. While the first running period until 2018 can provide detailed description of the global and bulk phenomena and a first set of intriguing results on rare probes of heavy-ion collisions, many important questions involving rare pro...
متن کاملMeasuring beauty production in Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC via single electrons in ALICE
The ALICE experiment [1] will study proton–proton, proton–nucleus and nucleus– nucleus collisions at the LHC, with centre-of-mass energies per nucleon–nucleon (NN) pair, √ sNN, of 5.5 TeV for Pb–Pb, 8.8 TeV for p–Pb, and 14 TeV for pp. The primary physics goal of ALICE is the study of the properties of QCD matter at the energy densities of several hundred times the density of atomic nuclei that...
متن کاملProspects for identified leading particle correlation at LHC and in ALICE
Azimuthal di-hadron correlations play important role in the characterization of the medium created in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC. Moreover, as a novel phenomenon, strong modification of the away-side correlation is observed in Au+Au with respect to p+p collisions. Below the exclusive jet reconstruction threshold at LHC, leading particle correlations will provide access to the regime where har...
